The Indian company, independently listed on the BSE and NSE since June 15, 2026 following its demerger from the Vedanta Group, has set a long-term target of <strong>20 GW of installed capacity<\/strong> and intends to make nuclear power a significant share of its generation mix. Chairman <strong>Anil Agarwal<\/strong> was unambiguous: between 20 and 25 percent of the company&#8217;s future generation capacity could come from nuclear.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a vague statement of intent. Vedanta Power has already laid out measurable milestones: 12 GW by 2033, with the second 600 MW block at the Sakti plant in Chhattisgarh expected in the second half of fiscal year 2027. The group&#8217;s operational capacity has already doubled in recent years, rising from 2,580 MW to over 4,100 MW. Beyond the 4,780 MW already in its announced portfolio, the company is now adding nuclear, hydropower, and battery storage targets. Diversification is not an afterthought here \u2014 it is the backbone of the strategy.<\/p>\n<p>India&#8217;s regulatory environment has opened a clear window of opportunity. The <strong>SHANTI Bill<\/strong>, passed in 2025, allows private companies to own and operate nuclear power plants in India for the first time. Before that legislation, the sector was exclusively accessible to state-owned operators. Vedanta Power is entering this window with a solid operational base: thermal plants across Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha; a 500 MW power supply agreement with the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation at 5.38 rupees per kWh; and a newly independent corporate structure that makes it easier to raise dedicated capital.<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear energy is meant to address a problem that renewables alone cannot solve: <strong>continuous generation, independent of solar cycles and wind patterns<\/strong>, capable of sustaining industrial demand and grid stability. Vedanta Power is explicit about this: nuclear is a component of India&#8217;s energy transition precisely because it delivers round-the-clock electricity. India needs baseload power, not just peak capacity. With electricity demand growing at a sustained pace, the pressure on installed capacity is very real.<\/p>\n<p>Agarwal painted an even broader picture at the group&#8217;s AGM: record revenues of 1.74 lakh crore rupees in FY2026, all-time high profits of 25,096 crore rupees, and the ambition to turn each of the four demerged companies \u2014 aluminium, oil and gas, steel, and energy \u2014 into a $100 billion opportunity. Nuclear is not a complement to Vedanta&#8217;s energy strategy: it is one of its core pillars.
