The site is <strong>Buckley Space Force Base<\/strong> in Aurora, Colorado, under the Advanced Nuclear Power for Installations (ANPI) initiative led by the Defense Innovation Unit and the U.S. Air Force.<\/p>\n<p>The first HALEU allocation came in April 2025, when the DOE named five companies \u2014 including Radiant \u2014 as initial fuel recipients under the HALEU Availability Program. Radiant was also the first to finalize its contract, ahead of all four other awardees. The second allocation now cements an already well-defined path: the fuel will go to Standard Nuclear, which will fabricate it into TRISO fuel elements at its Oak Ridge, Tennessee facility in quantities sufficient for a full reactor core load at first startup. The fuel supply chain is operational.<\/p>\n<p>The Kaleidos is a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (helium) rated at 1 MWe, or approximately 3 MWt. It weighs 70 tonnes but fits inside a single standard shipping container. Once delivered to a site, it can be started up and connected to the grid within 48 hours. The fuel cycle lasts five years, with an overall operational life of twenty years. The core uses graphite blocks with a zinc hydride moderator and a supercritical CO\u2082 Brayton cycle for thermoelectric conversion. Passive cooling is provided by an air-jacket system that operates even in emergency conditions, with automatic shutdown in 300 milliseconds.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2026, the Department of the Air Force and the Defense Innovation Unit officially selected Radiant to supply Buckley Space Force Base, confirming that the first reactors will be delivered by 2028. The stated goal is to provide continuous, resilient power to the base&#8217;s critical infrastructure, including intelligence missions. In parallel, Radiant has signed a binding commercial agreement with <strong>Urenco<\/strong> for Western commercial enrichment of HALEU \u2014 the first such contract by a U.S. advanced reactor developer \u2014 and has broken ground on a factory for serial production of the Kaleidos in Oak Ridge, on the former Manhattan Project site.<\/p>\n<p>The first reactor test is scheduled for 2026 at the DOME facility at Idaho National Laboratory, where the Kaleidos will be the first new American reactor design tested in nearly fifty years. Radiant is targeting serial production of 50 reactors per year within a few years.
