These are not letters of intent \u2014 they are signed agreements, billions already committed, and construction sites in preparation. The energy demands of artificial intelligence are producing an effect the nuclear industry has been waiting for decades: private capital flowing directly into the financing of new reactors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Microsoft<\/strong> has signed a 20-year, $16 billion contract for 835 megawatts tied to the restart of the Three Mile Island plant, now rebranded as the Crane Clean Energy Center, with commercial operations expected around 2027. <strong>Constellation Energy<\/strong> secured a $1 billion loan from the U.S. Department of Energy to accelerate work on the site. Restarting an existing reactor takes less time than building a new one \u2014 and that matters when electricity demand is growing month after month. <strong>Amazon<\/strong> has invested over $20 billion to transform the Susquehanna facility into a campus powered directly by nuclear energy. <strong>Google<\/strong> struck the first corporate SMR deal in the United States with Kairos Power, targeting roughly 500 megawatts of <strong>small modular reactor<\/strong> capacity by 2030. <strong>Meta<\/strong> has issued a request for proposals for 1 to 4 gigawatts of new nuclear generation.<\/p>\n<p>The underlying logic is straightforward. A single hyperscale AI data center can require between 300 and 500 megawatts of electricity \u2014 comparable to the consumption of a mid-sized city. Multiply that across dozens of facilities being built simultaneously, and energy supply stops being an operating cost line item and becomes a strategic constraint. Renewables \u2014 solar and wind \u2014 cannot guarantee the continuous baseload power that data centers need to run, regardless of the time of day or weather conditions. Nuclear can. It is the only mature technology capable of delivering carbon-free power, consistently, at gigawatt scale.<\/p>\n<p>The International Energy Agency estimates that global electricity generation for data centers will grow from 460 TWh in 2024 to over 1,000 TWh by 2030, reaching 1,300 TWh by 2035. Tech companies have already planned financing for more than <strong>20 gigawatts of SMRs<\/strong>, according to IEA data. Goldman Sachs Research projects that up to three new nuclear plants could come online in the United States by 2030. The U.S. regulatory framework has also shifted significantly in 2025, with executive orders and streamlined permitting processes signaling concrete political support for nuclear expansion.<\/p>\n<p>What is unfolding represents a fundamental shift in perspective for the entire industry. For years, nuclear power sought investors willing to accept long timelines and heavy capital requirements. Today, it is the tech companies knocking on the door \u2014 armed with multi-decade contracts that guarantee stable revenue streams. Twenty-year agreements signal that AI-driven electricity demand is viewed as structural, not temporary.
