The proposal, opened for consultation by MSCI in August 2026, is not aimed exclusively at crypto-related companies: it targets any firm that accumulates non-operating assets without generating meaningful cash flows from its core business.<\/p>\n<p>A simulation run on May 2026 data produced three candidates for removal. <strong>Strategy<\/strong> (formerly MicroStrategy), with a float-adjusted market capitalisation of approximately $23.9 billion, tops the list. Yellow Cake follows, valued at around $1.81 billion, and <strong>Metaplanet<\/strong>, the Japanese company with a market cap of roughly $654 million, rounds out the group. Three very different names, united in MSCI&#8217;s view by an identical structural model: buying and holding non-operating assets, raising external capital to do so, and generating little or nothing from ongoing operations.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed mechanism works in two stages. First, a <strong>core screen<\/strong> is applied: if operating assets account for more than 50% of the total, the company passes without further scrutiny. Those that fail this threshold are then subjected to a second layer of assessment based on five financial ratios \u2014 operating asset intensity, expense intensity, cash flow, fair value intensity, and reliance on external capital. To be removed from the index, a company must fail at least four of the five tests for two consecutive annual periods. Yellow Cake, which neither operates mines nor processing facilities but simply acquires and stores physical uranium, fits this profile exactly. Its presence in the simulation is the clearest evidence that the proposal carries no specific bias against the crypto sector.<\/p>\n<p>This is already MSCI&#8217;s second move on the issue. In October 2025, the index provider had proposed excluding so-called Digital Asset Treasury Companies with more than 50% of their balance sheet allocated to digital assets. Strategy responded with a formal letter in December, calling the proposal &#8220;discriminatory, arbitrary, and unworkable.&#8221; In January 2026, MSCI suspended that rule while announcing a broader review of non-operating companies. Now it has followed through. The new consultation drops all explicit references to digital assets and relies on sector-neutral ratios \u2014 yet the simulation&#8217;s outcome remains largely the same.<\/p>\n<p>The potential market consequences are real. Passive funds and ETFs tracking MSCI benchmarks would be required to sell any excluded stocks within a concentrated timeframe. JPMorgan analysts estimated last year that the removal of Strategy alone could trigger approximately $2.8 billion in forced selling \u2014 a figure that more recent estimates place in the $1.8\u2013$2 billion range, reflecting subsequent price moves. For Yellow Cake, the impact would be smaller in scale but the mechanism is identical. MSCI is collecting feedback until 30 September 2026. Any changes would take effect with the November 2026 index review, should the proposal be adopted.
