India and Uzbekistan have signed a long-term uranium supply agreement<\/strong>, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi following talks with Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Tashkent. The two nations elevated their bilateral relationship to the level of a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership<\/strong>, while also setting a bilateral trade target of five billion dollars.<\/p>\n

Modi stated plainly: “We will also establish a long-term agreement for the supply of uranium.” The announcement came at the conclusion of delegation-level talks covering trade, investment, digital connectivity, defense, and energy. Operational details \u2014 supply volumes and timelines \u2014 were not disclosed in the joint statement. Bilateral trade between the two countries already exceeds one billion dollars, and the new uranium agreement adds a concrete energy dimension to a relationship that had previously been centered on other sectors.<\/p>\n

The move follows a clear rationale. India holds domestic uranium reserves of poor quality, insufficient to sustain the expansion of its civilian nuclear program. The country primarily uses natural uranium in its pressurized heavy water reactors, which do not require fuel enrichment. This makes foreign supply essential. Uzbekistan ranks among the world’s top five natural uranium producers, yet until now had remained outside India’s procurement network.<\/p>\n

New Delhi has been rapidly expanding its nuclear fuel agreements in recent months. Cameco<\/strong>, Canada’s leading uranium producer, signed a contract worth approximately 2.6 billion Canadian dollars to deliver nearly 22 million pounds of uranium concentrate to India’s Department of Atomic Energy between 2027 and 2035. Active supply arrangements with Russia, Kazakhstan, and France are also in place. The Uzbek deal serves to further reduce dependence on any single supplier, shielding the supply chain from potential geopolitical disruptions.<\/p>\n

Beyond uranium, the Tashkent talks covered cooperation in critical minerals, artificial intelligence, space, and clean energy. Modi proposed a Foreign Minister-level Coordination Council to steer bilateral collaboration, and suggested upgrading the existing joint commission from secretary to ministerial level. A business summit involving companies from both countries was also agreed upon.<\/p>\n

The broader long-term picture is that of a country methodically building its nuclear energy independence. India has set a target of reaching 100 GW of installed nuclear capacity by 2047, and achieving that goal requires fuel secured over decades, not spot purchases.
