The agreement represents a concrete technical milestone on the path to feeding nuclear-generated power into the country&#8217;s grid.<\/p>\n<p>Under the terms of the deal, operational data and signals from the plant will be linked in real time to the NLDC&#8217;s control and monitoring infrastructure. This kind of integration is essential for managing the stable and safe contribution of a baseload source like nuclear power within an already complex grid. GE Vernova&#8217;s grid solutions division will supply the systems and technologies needed to make Rooppur compatible with the national dispatch framework.<\/p>\n<p>The Rooppur plant, located in Ishwardi in western Bangladesh, consists of two <strong>VVER-1200<\/strong> reactors rated at 1,200 MWe each, for a total installed capacity of 2.4 GWe. Nuclear fuel loading for Unit 1 began on April 28, 2026. If all testing and commissioning activities are completed successfully, the generator is expected to be connected to the grid around the 114th day after fuel loading. The initial target is to supply 300 MW to the national grid, with Unit 1 expected to reach full capacity of 1,200 MW by December.<\/p>\n<p>Bangladesh has been advancing this project for over a decade, with <strong>Rosatom<\/strong> serving as the main EPC contractor. Having weathered the Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, and a series of global crises, Bangladesh is now moving toward nuclear power generation. With this milestone, the country is set to become the 33rd nation in the world to harness nuclear energy. Electricity demand is growing at roughly 7% per year, and a heavy reliance on natural gas \u2014 which still accounts for more than 60% of the energy mix \u2014 makes diversification an urgent priority.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement with GE Vernova is far from a minor detail. Connecting a large baseload generation source to a national dispatch system requires precise protocols, data synchronization, and redundancy in control systems. Entrusting this task to an operator with global expertise in grid infrastructure strengthens the technical credibility of the entire operation and reduces start-up risks. The stakes for Dhaka are high: Rooppur is the most expensive project in the country&#8217;s history, with total costs estimated at around 1,390 billion taka.<\/p>\n<p>Once Unit 1 reaches full power, Bangladesh will structurally shift its energy mix. Two VVER-1200 reactors running at full capacity will be able to cover a significant share of national demand, easing pressure on gas-fired generators and curbing the frequent blackouts that still affect large segments of the population.
