Atomarine<\/strong> wants to take data centers out to sea, power them with nuclear-propelled vessels, and do it four times faster than any land-based deployment. The startup, founded in Boston in 2026 by Dimitris Koutentakis<\/strong> and Emile Germonpr\u00e9<\/strong> and selected for Y Combinator<\/strong>‘s summer batch, presented its project at the July Demo Day to remarkable interest from venture capitalists. It has already gathered over $4 billion<\/strong> in letters of intent from potential customers in the computing infrastructure space.<\/p>\n

The model is architecturally straightforward in its logic: standardized modular barges, built on a single shipyard production line, anchored 10\u201312 nautical miles offshore and connected to vessels that supply power entirely off-grid. Cooling is handled by seawater. Each platform delivers between 75 and 100 MW, with the ability to scale up to around 450 MW by aggregating multiple barges. The business plan calls for a first pilot running on natural gas by 2028<\/strong>, with a transition to nuclear-powered vessels beginning in 2032<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The context driving this bet is grounded in reality. AI-generated compute demand has made the onshore situation untenable: grid interconnection timelines are stretching toward a decade, data centers are driving up local energy costs, rents, and land prices, and community opposition has blocked more than half of all planned projects since 2025. Going offshore means bypassing the interconnection queue, eliminating the impact on local communities, and gaining access to near-free cooling. The founders estimate deployment speeds four to five times faster than land-based installations.<\/p>\n

The founders’ backgrounds are anything but coincidental for a project like this. Koutentakis holds four degrees from MIT<\/strong> \u2014 electrical engineering and computer science, mechanical engineering, and an MBA \u2014 and has deep roots in the Greek maritime industry. Germonpr\u00e9 is a PhD candidate in nuclear engineering, a Fulbright Scholar, and valedictorian of the engineering school at Ghent University. The combination of maritime, nuclear, and financial expertise is a core pillar of the investment thesis Atomarine presents to backers. On the energy side, the startup is banking on SMRs<\/strong> \u2014 small modular reactors \u2014 currently under development by several global operators, though no reactor of this type has yet been qualified for commercial naval applications.<\/p>\n

Atomarine is not alone in this space. Seatrium<\/strong>, a Singapore-based offshore specialist, is developing a 30 MW pilot using six containerized modules on barges, already validated by Bureau Veritas. Scottish firm Mocean<\/strong> is raising funds for its own offshore computing project. The fact that multiple players are converging on the same approach \u2014 offshore, off-grid, seawater-cooled \u2014 suggests that the pressure on land-based infrastructure is not a temporary phenomenon.
