Realta Fusion<\/strong> achieved on June 19, 2026, the first private demonstration of direct plasma energy conversion into electricity \u2014 bypassing the steam cycle that defines conventional thermal power plants. The test was conducted at the Wisconsin HTS Axisymmetric Mirror<\/strong> (WHAM), the experimental device that the startup operates in partnership with the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The results were publicly announced on June 30, 2026.<\/p>\n

The mechanism is known as Direct Energy Conversion<\/strong> (DEC) and works by decelerating the charged particles escaping from the plasma through a magnetic loss cone. An electrostatic converter positioned at the end of the device captures the kinetic energy of those particles and generates a voltage potential, which in turn drives a current through the external circuit. During the test, the system produced several amperes at approximately 100 volts \u2014 enough energy to power a few incandescent light bulbs. Modest in scale, but unambiguous in principle.<\/p>\n

CEO Kieran Furlong<\/strong> put it plainly: the field has been talking about DEC for years \u2014 Realta simply went ahead and did it. Chief Scientific Officer Derek Sutherland<\/strong> clarified that the current demonstration does not yet represent a net energy gain, nor large-scale conversion. Most of the energy converted in this test came from the external power supply used to heat the plasma, not from fusion itself. That distinction matters. The underlying physics, however, has now been validated on a real machine \u2014 and that shifts the outlook for the next steps.<\/p>\n

Why does eliminating turbines matter? The conventional thermal cycle, used in virtually all existing nuclear power plants, introduces unavoidable losses tied to the heat-to-steam-to-mechanical-rotation-to-electricity conversion chain. Direct conversion bypasses that entire chain. According to Realta Fusion<\/strong>‘s projections, scaling the DEC system to tens or hundreds of megawatts could fully cover the plant’s internal energy consumption for continuous operation, cutting the cost per kilowatt-hour by 10\u201320% compared to a conventional approach. Residual heat could either be used directly or converted into additional electricity for end users.<\/p>\n

The DEC approach is not unique to Realta. Helion Energy<\/strong> has publicly described an inductive direct recovery method, based on the compression and subsequent expansion of field-reversed configuration plasmas that push against the external magnetic field, increasing current in the coils. Different architectures, same goal: extract energy from fusion without the filter of a thermal cycle. The fact that two private companies are now developing concrete DEC systems \u2014 each with a distinct approach \u2014 signals that the question is no longer theoretical.<\/p>\n

The next step for Realta Fusion<\/strong> is to assess plasma behavior under additional configurations, to determine how much energy will be recoverable when the source is fusion itself rather than an auxiliary heating system. WHAM remains the primary testbed. The road to a plant capable of producing net electricity is still long, but direct conversion \u2014 demonstrated, measured, and replicable \u2014 has left the realm of theory behind.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
