Alphabet<\/strong>, Google’s parent company, is on the verge of signing a multi-year agreement with Constellation Energy<\/strong> to purchase nuclear power in a deal worth at least one billion dollars. According to Bloomberg, citing sources familiar with the matter, the announcement could come as early as this week. The exact capacity and facilities involved have not yet been disclosed.<\/p>\n

The news does not come in isolation. Google has been steadily building a growing nuclear portfolio over recent months. Last year, the company struck a deal with NextEra Energy<\/strong> to restart a plant in Iowa. In September 2026, it signed an agreement with Georgia Power<\/strong> to add approximately 96 MW of nuclear capacity from the Vogtle and Hatch facilities, with customer benefits estimated at $900 million. A few weeks later, a deal with Southern Co.<\/strong> followed to fund upgrades at two power plants. The agreement with Constellation \u2014 the largest nuclear operator in the United States \u2014 would be the latest chapter in this strategy.<\/p>\n

Constellation is no stranger to this kind of partnership. It has already signed supply contracts with Amazon<\/strong> \u2014 690 MW from the Calvert Cliffs plant in Maryland, with over three billion dollars in expected infrastructure investment in the state \u2014 and with Microsoft<\/strong>. In January 2025, it announced a record one-billion-dollar deal with the General Services Administration to supply nuclear energy to U.S. federal agencies over ten years. Its client list keeps growing.<\/p>\n

The driving force behind this race is artificial intelligence. The data centers running large language models and advanced computing systems consume enormous amounts of electricity, and demand is growing faster than grids can absorb. Nuclear energy<\/strong> meets a very specific requirement: it delivers power continuously, around the clock, with no carbon emissions. Intermittent renewables \u2014 solar and wind \u2014 cannot guarantee the same baseload reliability. This is why major tech companies have turned to existing plants, which can deliver power on relatively short timelines. New reactors require a decade or more just for permitting and construction, and the next generation of advanced fission technologies is still far from large-scale deployment.<\/p>\n

The shift in perspective on nuclear energy is unmistakable. After years of losing momentum \u2014 driven by safety concerns and cost overruns on some construction projects \u2014 nuclear is now back as an active choice, not a fallback option. Demand from the tech sector is acting as a catalyst: it brings in private capital, stabilizes revenues for existing operators, and restores political credibility to nuclear energy across many countries. If the deal between Alphabet and Constellation is formalized in the coming days, it will be yet another signal that this trend is not a passing episode.
