Wayne<\/strong>, widely known as Apple&#8217;s third co-founder \u2014 the one who sold his stake back in 1976 for $800 \u2014 has a chapter in his life that very few people know about: in the 1960s, he worked at <strong>Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory<\/strong>, contributing to one of the most ambitious nuclear fusion projects in American history.<\/p>\n<p>The story has surfaced in an indirect way. Wayne recently announced the launch of <strong>&#8220;RGW Virtual Presence&#8221;<\/strong>, an AI-powered avatar designed to preserve and pass on his personal and professional legacy. In outlining his biography, the accompanying press release notes that in the mid-1960s Wayne joined Livermore as a technical draftsman, eventually advancing to the role of associate engineer on the <strong>Mirror Fusion Reactor Project<\/strong>. In that capacity, he founded and managed a precision model laboratory in support of experimental nuclear research.<\/p>\n<p>The project Wayne was involved with was part of a line of research <strong>Lawrence Livermore<\/strong> had been pursuing since the early 1950s. The Mirror Fusion Test Facility \u2014 known as the MFTF \u2014 was a magnetic confinement device based on the magnetic mirror principle, designed to trap plasma in a cylindrical region using powerful magnetic fields at each end. By any measure, it was the largest magnetic mirror machine ever built. Construction ran from 1977 to 1986, at a total cost of roughly $372 million. The laboratory built the world&#8217;s largest superconducting magnet at the time, wound from thirty miles of copper and niobium-titanium wire in the distinctive &#8220;yin-yang&#8221; configuration.<\/p>\n<p>Wayne, however, worked at Livermore in an earlier phase \u2014 the 1960s \u2014 when the program was still in a more modest experimental stage. His contribution was hands-on and technical: building precision scale models to help researchers visualize and test components. It was craftsman&#8217;s work in the service of frontier science. In the late 1970s, while the Apple II was reshaping the personal computer market, Wayne was building scale models for the federal government \u2014 including those for the Mirror Fusion Reactor Project that dominated Livermore&#8217;s activity during that period. Two parallel careers, both his own, that are rarely told together.<\/p>\n<p>The story of the Mirror Fusion Test Facility came to an abrupt end. The world&#8217;s largest and most expensive magnetic mirror machine was mothballed at Lawrence Livermore on the very day it was completed, in 1986. Federal budget cuts and disappointing results from smaller-scale experiments convinced the Department of Energy to never actually switch the device on. That outcome shaped the perception of magnetic mirrors as a dead end in fusion research for decades to come.<\/p>\n<p>That perception is now being challenged. Several startups are revisiting the magnetic mirror principle, applying new geometries and materials that simply didn&#8217;t exist in the 1960s or 1980s. The work done at Livermore \u2014 including that of those who built scale models \u2014 helped accumulate a body of technical knowledge that was never truly lost.
