NTPC Limited<\/strong>, India’s largest integrated energy operator, has published an Expression of Interest targeting commercial and industrial entities willing to invest a 26% equity stake<\/strong> in new co-generation projects. The goal is to build plants capable of simultaneously supplying steam and electricity to large industrial consumers through an integrated energy system \u2014 one that is significantly more efficient than procuring the two sources separately.<\/p>\n

Co-generation \u2014 technically known as CHP, or Combined Heat and Power \u2014 produces both electricity and useful heat from a single fuel source. A plant of this kind simultaneously generates electricity and thermal energy, in the form of heat or steam, from a single energy input. This model reduces conversion losses and lowers overall costs for energy-intensive industries such as chemicals, petrochemicals, steel, and food processing. These projects will operate within integrated energy supply systems combining coal, renewable sources, and battery energy storage systems (BESS).<\/p>\n

NTPC aims to structure long-term energy supply agreements capable of delivering reliable and cost-effective solutions to industrial customers. This call is more than a simple invitation to express interest: it marks a shift in approach. The initiative represents an effort to move the group’s offering beyond traditional supply contracts, toward captive generation arrangements and deeper cooperation with large industrial consumers. In other words, NTPC does not merely want to sell energy \u2014 it wants to build it alongside its largest clients, sharing both risks and returns.<\/p>\n

The utility currently operates an installed base of over 91 GW, with a further 35 GW under construction. Although it accounts for roughly 16% of total national capacity, NTPC contributes over 25% of the country’s total electricity generation, thanks to operational efficiency levels well above the national average. On this foundation, the group has embarked on a systematic diversification drive. Beyond expanding its baseload generation, the state-owned company has broadened its activities into adjacent sectors, with active projects in e-mobility, energy storage, waste-to-energy, nuclear energy<\/strong>, and green hydrogen. Nuclear power, in particular, has become an explicit strategic priority: India has ambitious plans to significantly accelerate its atomic capacity over the next decade, and NTPC intends to play a direct role in that expansion.<\/p>\n

This move comes against the backdrop of an Indian industrial system under mounting energy pressure. Electricity demand from large industrial consumers is growing at a pace that traditional infrastructure is struggling to match. “With industries increasingly focused on energy security, cost optimisation and sustainability, co-generation offers an opportunity to improve overall energy efficiency by producing steam and electricity through an integrated system,” NTPC stated. The 26% stake reserved for partners is no coincidence: it keeps operational control firmly with NTPC, while giving co-investors meaningful weight in project decisions and revenue sharing.<\/p>\n

If market response meets expectations, this model could become a benchmark for India’s industrial energy transition.
