The key lies in the order of operations: heat the plasma before increasing its density, not the other way around. This reversal of the conventional sequence could dramatically cut the energy needed to trigger a self-sustaining reaction.

The study, authored by physicists Luis Delgado-Aparicio, Masayuki Ono, and Jonathan Menard, has been published in Physical Review Letters. The team developed an expanded version of the Lawson criterion — the mathematical equation that for over seventy years has defined the minimum conditions for a plasma to remain hot and dense enough to sustain fusion without additional external heating. The original criterion sets the target, but says nothing about the most efficient route to reach it. The new model does.

The work incorporates four physical factors that previous models tended to overlook: the buildup of helium as a reaction byproduct, impurities released by the reactor’s inner wall lining, synchrotron radiation emitted by electrons in magnetic fields, and heat losses from the plasma. By integrating these variables, the team mapped a path to ignition that avoids the highest energy peaks. The research also identified the so-called Cordey pass — a boundary region between a plasma that requires external heating and one capable of sustaining the reaction through its own heat. Passing through this region, rather than over it, is the shortcut the Princeton team has pinpointed.

The implications for reactor design are concrete. The model shows that traces of tungsten inside the plasma — even as little as one part in ten thousand — can double the pressure required to achieve ignition. More than a dozen next-generation machines, both tokamaks and stellarators, have already chosen tungsten as their inner wall material due to its resistance to extreme temperatures. The PPPL findings signal that this factor deserves careful consideration in future design decisions. Conversely, certain energy losses within the plasma that were previously viewed purely as a drawback can, under specific conditions, actually help stabilize the fusion process.

The traditional approach involved compressing the plasma first, then heating it to the required temperatures — higher than those at the solar core. The new scheme reverses this sequence: heat first, then increase density. According to PPPL’s calculations, this path bypasses the highest energy requirements while still reaching the same ignition conditions. The research is currently theoretical and has not yet been experimentally verified, but it provides reactor designers with a far more precise roadmap than anything previously available.

If the results hold up under experimental testing, the consequences for the entire fusion sector could be far-reaching. Reducing the required energy input means moving meaningfully closer to reactors capable of producing more energy than they consume. The updated model could reshape how tokamaks and stellarators are designed and operated, steering key decisions before construction even begins. For PPPL, this work comes during an intense period of research activity, with fusion attracting growing public and private investment. A stronger theoretical foundation is exactly what the field needs to accelerate the transition from laboratory experiments to commercial reactors.

Physicists at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory have identified a more efficient method to achieve fusion ignition: heating the plasma before compressing it, reversing the traditional sequence.
