The order comes through Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Limited (MEIL), the EPC contractor for the plant. For TARIL, this marks a genuine breakthrough — a company that started out as an industrial transformer manufacturer is now stepping into the most demanding segment of the power supply chain for the very first time.

Kaiga Units 5 and 6 are two pressurised heavy water reactors rated at 700 MWe each, designed entirely in India. Together, they will add 1,400 MW of nuclear capacity to the Kaiga site, one of the longest-running plants in India’s nuclear fleet. The project is part of the national 700 MWe PHWR programme, which aims to scale up domestic nuclear generation using locally developed technologies and components. TARIL’s transformers will handle power evacuation from both reactors and their integration into the high-voltage transmission grid.

The order, classified as “large,” is valued between 100 and 500 crore rupees, with an execution timeline of 35 months. Nor is it a one-off win. During the same quarter, TARIL also received an order from Damodar Valley Corporation for 500 MVA and 200 MVA autotransformers, along with contracts from Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation. The order book is strengthening across multiple fronts simultaneously, with the export component — primarily targeting the US and European markets — now representing a structural share of revenues.

The financial results confirm the company’s positive momentum. In the second quarter of FY27, TARIL posted a consolidated net profit up 118% year-on-year, with gross revenues reaching approximately 2,395 crore rupees. The stock had already reacted sharply to the nuclear order announcement, surging nearly 8% in a single trading session. The combination of a growing order book and improving margins points to a clear upward trajectory in the quarters ahead.

The broader context is equally significant. MEIL had secured the EPC contract for Kaiga 5 and 6 in April 2025, worth 12,800 crore rupees — the single largest order ever awarded by NPCIL. TARIL’s involvement adds another layer of indigenous manufacturing capability to a project that India considers central to achieving its energy targets by 2047. TARIL’s Managing Director Satyen Mamtora described the order as an entry into the high-value segment of the nuclear power supply chain, with long-term ambitions spanning the entire high-voltage transmission infrastructure linked to the country’s atomic plants.

If TARIL delivers this contract on time and to the exacting standards required by the nuclear industry — which demands far tighter tolerances and certifications than conventional markets — this first order could open up a sustainable line of business. India has ambitious plans to significantly expand its nuclear capacity over the coming decades, and every new plant will need high-reliability electrical components. Being already embedded in the NPCIL supply chain, at this stage, is worth far more than the contract itself.

Transformers and Rectifiers (India) has secured its first-ever order in the nuclear energy sector, supplying generator transformers for NPCIL’s Kaiga Units 5 and 6 in Karnataka.
