India and Poland have agreed to deepen cooperation in defence, space and nuclear energy. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the move on Thursday after talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.

Modi invited Polish companies to work with India on co-development and co-production projects across the three sectors. Tusk, who is on a three-day visit to the country, described the talks as productive and spoke of economic and industrial complementarities between the two economies. The list of shared topics also includes trade, investment and critical minerals, along with an exchange of views on regional and global issues. According to Indian press reports, one of the goals is to double bilateral trade by 2030.

The nuclear file follows the launch of the strategic partnership. The two capitals raised their relations to that level in August 2024, during Modi’s visit to Warsaw, the first by an Indian prime minister to Poland in 45 years. On that occasion, a five-year action plan was launched that named energy and green technologies among the areas of collaboration. Modi noted that the relationship has gained fresh momentum over the past two years and that several decisions to strengthen it were taken in New Delhi.

For India, nuclear power is a pillar of its energy plans. The country is seeking industrial partners and technology suppliers, and has already struck agreements with other governments, including France on small modular and advanced reactors. The same applies to fuel: in March, Cameco signed a contract with India’s Department of Atomic Energy for about 22 million pounds of uranium concentrate, with deliveries from 2027 to 2035. Poland, for its part, is building its own civil nuclear programme and is keen to bring in new industrial and financial partners.

The agreement does not yet name any projects, reactors or companies involved. The next step will be to turn the political declaration into agreements between companies and research bodies. If Warsaw and New Delhi go on to collaborate across the supply chain, from components to workforce training, nuclear could become one of the most concrete chapters of the strategic partnership between the two countries.
