The US Department of Energy has designated helium a critical material<\/strong>. The decision is dated October 23, 2026, and carries the signature of Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who acted under the Energy Act of 2020. Helium becomes the 20th element on the federal list, which already includes lithium, cobalt and rare earths.<\/p>\n

The gas also plays a role in nuclear power production, alongside wind, solar, space exploration, medical imaging and research. The Department describes it as irreplaceable in several energy-related functions: semiconductor manufacturing, leak testing of natural gas infrastructure, and quantum computing. In many chip applications, the agency explains, there are no viable alternatives. Helium cools superconducting magnets and carries heat away from silicon wafers during fabrication.<\/p>\n

To qualify for the list, a non-fuel substance must perform an essential function in one or more energy technologies. There must also be a high risk of supply chain disruption. The Department found that both conditions were met. Global demand for helium is growing faster than production, and supplies have been hit by severe shocks this year. According to reports, Iranian attacks in March on the Ras Laffan facility in Qatar cut global exports by roughly 14%.<\/p>\n

The United States has substantial deposits of helium-rich natural gas. Production is held back by limited refining capacity and lengthy permitting times. The designation targets precisely these two bottlenecks. According to the Associated Press, it opens the way to additional federal funding for producers and places the material under closer government oversight. Under Secretary of Energy Audrey Robertson spoke of decisive action to ensure American producers have reliable access to the resource.<\/p>\n

For the nuclear sector, the news has practical implications. Reactors, research facilities and fusion programs use helium in cooling systems and cryogenic applications. A stronger domestic supply chain reduces exposure to external shocks and makes costs and procurement timelines more predictable for those designing new plants. Helium thus enters the same strategic framework the United States already applies to uranium and advanced fuels.<\/p>\n

The next step will be measured on the ground. If federal funds translate into new refining capacity and faster permits, the United States will be able to supply its own semiconductor, research and energy needs.
