The funds will go toward boosting the output of operating nuclear plants, with projects that would bring roughly 1.1 gigawatts of additional capacity onto the grid.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement came on October 27. The loan could cover uprates, meaning power increases at existing plants, at eight sites: Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle and Quad Cities in Illinois, Calvert Cliffs in Maryland, and Limerick in Pennsylvania. The financing also allows for supporting future output increases at other plants in the company&#8217;s fleet. The commitment remains subject to due diligence, negotiation of final documents and satisfaction of the applicable conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The loan adds to private investment already under way. Constellation has 20-year agreements with <strong>Google and Amazon<\/strong> that have unlocked more than $7 billion of investment for about 1,080 megawatts of new nuclear capacity. A contract with Meta also supports a 30-megawatt expansion at Clinton, Illinois. Energy Secretary Chris Wright tied the deal to the DOE&#8217;s <strong>UPRISE<\/strong> program, which aims to extract maximum electricity output from existing reactors by combining public and private capital.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the move is surging electricity demand from AI data centers and manufacturing. Uprating an already licensed reactor takes less time than building a new one, and federal credit lowers the cost of capital. For Constellation, which operates about 21 reactors across the Midwest and the East Coast, it is the second DOE loan in less than a year: in November 2025 the Department closed a $1 billion loan to restart the Crane Clean Energy Center in Pennsylvania, an 835-megawatt unit. The administration also recently offered Vistra up to $4.2 billion for work on reactors in Pennsylvania and Ohio.<\/p>\n<p>President and CEO <strong>Joe Dominguez<\/strong> said the commitment can help the company move faster, putting more reliable power on the grid, creating and sustaining jobs, and lowering costs for families and businesses. CEG shares rose about 2.7% following the news.<\/p>\n<p>If the loan reaches financial close, the eight plants will become a testing ground for a replicable model: demand from tech companies, long-term contracts and low-cost federal credit.
