The US Department of Energy has offered Constellation Energy<\/strong> a conditional commitment of up to $5 billion to finance power uprates at eight nuclear plants. The work would add nearly 1.1 GW to the existing fleet, enough to power more than 930,000 homes.<\/p>\n

Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced the offer on October 27 during a visit to the Byron plant in Illinois. The financing is being handled through the Office of Energy Dominance Financing and covers the Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle and Quad Cities plants in Illinois, plus Calvert Cliffs in Maryland and Limerick in Pennsylvania. In total, 15 operating reactors are involved. The DOE estimates the projects are tied to more than 10,000 jobs.<\/p>\n

Uprates increase the output of reactors that are already running, without building new plants or new transmission lines. Constellation says federal support can lower financing costs and shorten timelines. President and CEO Joe Dominguez described the deal as a way to get more power out of assets that are already available. Wright compared the 1,100 megawatts to building another reactor, but without the complexity of a new construction site.<\/p>\n

The backdrop is rising US electricity demand, driven by AI data centers, transport electrification and manufacturing. President Donald Trump has set a goal of quadrupling American nuclear capacity by 2050. Wright said the DOE has hundreds of billions of dollars in financing available, much of it earmarked for nuclear. On the private side, 20-year agreements with Google and Amazon already support more than $7 billion in Constellation investment for roughly 1,080 MW of additional capacity.<\/p>\n

The commitment is conditional<\/strong> and remains subject to due diligence and final financing agreements. It does not amount to a decision to carry out every individual uprate. It is the second offer of this kind from the DOE in October. The UPRISE program has now identified about 4.7 GW of potential capacity increases, against a target of 5 GW. The administration has conditionally approved nearly $30 billion for the sector. In February 2026, a $26.5 billion package was closed with Southern Company, including license extensions and more than 300 MW of possible uprates.<\/p>\n

This is not Constellation’s first federal loan. In November 2025 it secured a guarantee of up to $1 billion for the restart of the Crane plant, backed by a 20-year contract with Microsoft. If the due diligence is completed without obstacles, the Constellation model could become the template for other US operators: more megawatts from existing plants<\/strong>, with low-cost public capital and long-term private contracts as collateral.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
