Canada and the European Union will modernise the Canada-Euratom nuclear cooperation agreement<\/strong>. The commitment appears in the joint statement of the 21st EU-Canada Summit, held in Montr\u00e9al on 29 and 30 October 2026, which launched the “Alliance for the Future”.<\/p>\n

The text provides for continuing existing cooperation on nuclear technologies, with three areas named: uranium, fuels and fuel cycle services. Around the table were Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Ant\u00f3nio Costa. The nuclear chapter is part of a broader section on energy and critical raw materials.<\/p>\n

The same section includes a joint feasibility study on liquefied natural gas exports to Europe. The two sides also intend to deepen collaboration on power grids, battery storage, and the physical and cyber protection of energy infrastructure. The agreement also aims to facilitate European investment in Canadian raw materials deposits and to integrate the related value chains, involving financial institutions on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n

The legal framework has a long history. The relationship between Ottawa and Euratom rests on an agreement for the peaceful uses of atomic energy signed in 1959 and amended several times. This was later joined by an arrangement on nuclear research, covering safeguards, reactor safety and controlled fusion. Canada already took part in the European contribution to the ITER project in the 1990s.<\/p>\n

The context explains the mutual interest. Canada is a uranium producer with a well-established industrial supply chain, while Europe is looking for reliable suppliers of fuel and services for its reactors. An updated agreement gives suppliers and plant operators a clearer framework for long-term contracts. For European countries looking to nuclear power, Italy included, it also means a politically stable supply channel.<\/p>\n

The declaration sets no date for concluding the negotiations, and the details of the new text remain to be defined. If the process succeeds, Euratom and Ottawa could extend the framework to next-generation technologies, starting with the small modular reactors in which Canada has long been investing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
