Rolls-Royce SMR<\/strong> now has contractual commitments for its small modular reactors in three European countries: the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic and Sweden. The latest piece of the puzzle is the decision by Videberg Kraft, an 80%-owned Vattenfall subsidiary, to select the British company to build Sweden’s first three units on the V\u00e4r\u00f6 peninsula on the west coast.<\/p>\n

The Swedish agreement was announced in mid-June 2026. Euronews described it as a multi-billion-pound contract. According to Rolls-Royce, it marks Sweden’s first new nuclear build in more than forty years. The selection process began in 2022 and considered both large reactors and SMRs. At an early stage, the shortlist was narrowed down to Rolls-Royce SMR and US-based GE Vernova.<\/p>\n

In the United Kingdom, the project is further along. Great British Energy \u2013 Nuclear chose Rolls-Royce SMR after a two-year evaluation, and in April 2026 the two parties signed the contract to begin work at the Wylfa site on the Isle of Anglesey, in North Wales. Three units are planned there. Also in April, Rolls-Royce secured up to \u00a3599 million from the National Wealth Fund to support reactor development.<\/p>\n

In the Czech Republic, the \u010cEZ group has opted for 470 MW units, for a total capacity of up to 3 GW. In September 2026 it signed an early works contract with Rolls-Royce SMR for the country’s first SMR programme, at the Temel\u00edn nuclear site in South Bohemia. This is the phase that precedes actual construction.<\/p>\n

Rolls-Royce chief executive Tufan Erginbilgic said the company has won every competitive SMR tender in Europe. His counterpart at Rolls-Royce SMR, Chris Cholerton, claimed to be the only developer with multiple contractual commitments for unit deliveries on the continent. The company also says it holds an 18-month lead over its competitors in the British regulator’s assessment process.<\/p>\n

The market outlook is favourable. According to the International Energy Agency, with supportive policies more than 1,000 SMRs could be installed worldwide by 2050, with cumulative investment of around $670 billion. The European Commission regards the technology as a useful asset for its clean energy and energy security goals.<\/p>\n

The next step is industrial. Rolls-Royce aims for factory production that, at full rate, will deliver multiple units per year, and three European orders help fill that schedule. For Italy, which is reopening the debate on next-generation nuclear power, the Wylfa, Temel\u00edn and V\u00e4r\u00f6 projects will be the first concrete cases to watch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
