The pathway leads to DOE authorization to design, build and operate a pilot facility at Idaho National Laboratory, where the company would produce lead test assemblies of its advanced nuclear fuel. The news came alongside the release of its third-quarter 2026 results.<\/p>\n<p>The selection dates back to August. The program is run by the laboratory&#8217;s National Reactor Innovation Center. The facility now has a name: the Lightbridge Fuel Pilot Factory, known internally as SHED. The project envisions a multipurpose platform for fuel production and research, with a dedicated laboratory and an NQA-1 quality assurance program in place from the outset.<\/p>\n<p>The financial position is solid. As of September 30, 2026, the company held approximately <strong>$236.7 million<\/strong> in cash and cash equivalents, with no debt. Research spending rose and the net loss for the first nine months of the year widened, reflecting investment in the program. The stock closed the session down about 8.5%.<\/p>\n<p>The significance is technical. Previously, producing lead test assemblies required a commercial fabrication plant already licensed by the NRC. With the Launch Pad, the company can take the DOE route and produce samples for demonstration in U.S. commercial reactors on a shorter timeline. CEO Seth Grae explained that there is no longer a need to wait for a license for a commercial-scale facility. The pilot plant will remain under DOE authorization at all times and outside NRC licensing. In parallel, conceptual design continues for the future Lightbridge Fuel Factory, the commercial site.<\/p>\n<p>On the testing front, Lightbridge signed a project task statement in August under its research agreement with <strong>Battelle Energy Alliance<\/strong>, the laboratory operator on behalf of the DOE. The agreement provides access to loop testing in the Advanced Test Reactor, a rare testing capability. Examination of the first irradiated samples is under way, and the first fuel test results are expected in 2027. Japan has also issued a notice of allowance for a patent.<\/p>\n<p>The supply chain remains an open issue. Production will require qualified uranium sources, including <strong>HALEU<\/strong> and uranium metal, and the company is evaluating suppliers, alternative solutions and infrastructure requirements. The DOE has clarified that authorization of the facility will not cover the use of the samples in commercial reactors, which will require a separate process.
