Amentum<\/strong>, a NYSE-listed company headquartered in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Japan’s Kyoto Fusioneering<\/strong>. The aim is to commercialize fusion energy in three markets: the United Kingdom, Japan and the United States. The announcement was made on November 3, 2026.<\/p>\n

The agreement creates a framework for cooperation to jointly pursue opportunities in public and private fusion programs. Each company brings different expertise. Amentum contributes systems engineering, plant integration, nuclear safety, digital engineering and program management. Kyoto Fusioneering offers fuel cycle systems, the breeding blanket, which produces the tritium needed for operation, and plasma heating. It also brings experience gained in integrating these technologies into fusion power plant projects.<\/p>\n

The two companies are not tying the agreement to a single reactor type. Amentum describes its capability as technology-agnostic, while Kyoto Fusioneering defines its solutions as independent of the plasma confinement approach. This allows them to bid on very different projects, from tokamaks and stellarators to laser-driven inertial fusion.<\/p>\n

The document also provides for examining digital engineering and artificial intelligence-based tools to complement plant design. The stated goal is to improve design efficiency and shorten development timelines for commercially viable power plants.<\/p>\n

The context is a sector in which plant engineering carries as much weight as plasma physics. Moving from experimental machines to power plants requires companies that can integrate systems, meet safety requirements and deliver complex programs on schedule. Amentum brings this experience from nuclear fission and large government projects. Kyoto Fusioneering is a systems integrator working with public and private programs around the world.<\/p>\n

Mark Whitney, president of Amentum’s Energy and Environment division, explained that combining the two companies’ capabilities can help address the engineering and delivery challenges required to take fusion beyond the experimental stage. For Amentum, Kyoto Fusioneering’s position in the Japanese market is an entry point to Japan and other relevant markets.<\/p>\n

Kyoto Fusioneering is meanwhile building a network of industrial agreements across several countries. On October 28 it signed a memorandum with Germany’s Proxima Fusion on gyrotrons for plasma heating and the fuel cycle. The same day, it reached an agreement with Focused Energy, a laser fusion developer. With Amentum, the company adds an engineering partner with a presence in three markets.<\/p>\n

A memorandum is not a contract, and the first results will only be visible once the two companies win a joint project. If that happens in the British, Japanese or American programs, fusion will have a systems supplier and an integrator already used to working together.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
