Prometheus, the largest artificial intelligence initiative applied to the American nuclear sector, is expanding. HiddenLayer, a Texas-based company specializing in AI system security, has joined the consortium led by Idaho National Laboratory that the U.S. Department of Energy has selected for a $60 million grant over three years, through the DOE’s Genesis Mission.
The project brings together four national laboratories, universities, and more than twenty industrial partners. Confirmed names include NVIDIA, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, Westinghouse, TerraPower, X-energy, GE Vernova, and several startups such as Oklo and Aalo Atomics. The stated goal is to build a secure digital thread connecting engineering models, regulatory requirements, manufacturing specifications, construction sites, and real-time operational data. This is not a laboratory experiment: it is an architecture designed to be embedded in the actual processes of a reactor’s lifecycle.
HiddenLayer’s contribution addresses a specific challenge: protecting AI models from vulnerabilities and adversarial attacks. As artificial intelligence transitions from a research tool to an integral component of licensing procedures, design workflows, and operational monitoring, the risk surface expands accordingly. The DOE aims to use AI tools to produce traceable licensing documents, reorganize decades of nuclear archives, conduct faster safety analyses, and support reactor monitoring — with final accountability always resting with human operators. In this context, the resilience of these systems against external interference is not a minor detail: it is a fundamental system requirement.
Prometheus is the first Phase II project selected under the Genesis Mission, a program established by executive order in November 2025. The choice of Idaho National Laboratory as the lead institution is consistent with the lab’s longstanding role in advanced nuclear research. The DOE has set an ambitious quantitative target: a 50% reduction in reactor deployment timelines and long-term operating costs. Even a partial achievement of this goal would significantly reshape the competitiveness of nuclear energy relative to other sources.
HiddenLayer’s involvement signals something meaningful about where the entire sector stands today. When a $60 million initiative — bringing together the leading names in American tech and nuclear industry — sees the need for a partner dedicated exclusively to AI security, it is a clear sign that these technologies are genuinely entering the production pipeline. The experimentation phase is giving way to operational integration. The next three years of Prometheus will show just how quickly that transition can unfold in an industry that, by its very nature, leaves no room for approximation.
