ASP Isotopes Evaluates Conversion Facility in Namibia

ASP Isotopes’ subsidiary Quantum Leap Energy has launched the public environmental and social assessment process for a pilot hydrofluorination and fluorination facility in the Walvis Bay area of Namibia. The goal is to strengthen the nuclear fuel supply chain for advanced reactors, SMRs, and fusion systems.

ASP Isotopes (NASDAQ: ASPI) announced on August 18, 2026, that its subsidiary Quantum Leap Energy is exploring metal conversion opportunities in Namibia. A public environmental and social assessment process has been initiated for a pilot hydrofluorination and fluorination facility in the Walvis Bay area.

The proposed facility would be used to develop, test, and demonstrate pilot-scale metal hydrofluorination and fluorination processes. Quantum Leap Energy focuses on uranium conversion, uranium-235 enrichment for nuclear fuel production — across the HALEU, LEU+, and LEU variants — and isotopic separation of lithium-6 and lithium-7, alongside the development of radioactive waste treatment technologies. Namibia is a strategic choice: the country ranks among the world’s largest uranium producers, with active mines and a well-established extraction industry, making it an ideal location for building a nuclear fuel value chain close to the raw material source.

Quantum Leap Energy holds exclusive global rights to two proprietary technologies: the Aerodynamic Separation Process (ASP) and the Quantum Enrichment (QE) laser enrichment system. These two technologies set the company apart in the low atomic mass isotope enrichment market. The stated goal is to close supply chain gaps for advanced nuclear reactors, small modular reactors, and fusion systems — all fast-growing segments globally where the availability of enriched fuel remains a genuine bottleneck. ASP Isotopes already operates isotope enrichment facilities in Pretoria, South Africa, also focused on low atomic mass elements.

The Namibian project is still in its exploratory phase. No final investment decision has been made, and any future development will depend on the outcome of technical, commercial, environmental, and regulatory assessments. In line with Namibian regulatory requirements, public consultation notices have been published in major local newspapers: Republikein, Allgemeine Zeitung, and The Namibian. Procedural transparency is an integral part of the process. The company has also built a partnership network with leading players in the nuclear sector, including TerraPower, Fermi America, and the South Africa Nuclear Energy Corporation (Necsa), underscoring a strategy aimed at commercializing the fuel supply chain on an international scale.

Should the Walvis Bay pilot facility pass the ongoing assessments, Namibia would become an operational hub in the African nuclear supply chain, complementing ASP Isotopes’ existing presence in South Africa. The SMR and fourth-generation reactor sector requires reliable, geographically diversified fuel sources — building them in southern Africa, close to uranium mines, follows a sound industrial logic. The coming months, as the environmental assessment concludes and a potential investment decision takes shape, will determine how much of this plan translates into concrete reality.
