BWXT Appoints Suzanne Maddux as SVP Operations to Drive Nuclear Growth

BWXT Appoints Suzanne Maddux as SVP Operations to Drive Nuclear Growth

BWX Technologies has appointed Suzanne Maddux as Senior Vice President of Operations, a newly created position reporting directly to President and CEO Rex Geveden. The decision sends a clear message: BWXT is restructuring its leadership to sustain growth across both military nuclear programs and the commercial nuclear energy market.

Maddux takes direct responsibility for four areas: Health, Safety and Environment, Security, Operational Excellence, and Supply Chain. She also oversees manufacturing operations, engineering, and quality. The scope is broad — and deliberately so. BWXT aims to consolidate under a single operational authority the key levers that drive the organization’s overall production capacity. A specific element of her mandate is to bridge the company’s two main divisions — Government Operations and Commercial Operations — with the goal of sharing proven practices and leveraging expertise built across both sides of the business.

Maddux comes from Mercury Systems, where she served as Vice President of Global Supply Chain, and brings eighteen years of experience in complex industrial environments. The choice of a leader with a strong supply chain and operations background is not incidental: BWXT is managing a backlog of $7.3 billion, of which $5.5 billion is tied to government contracts. With an order book of that scale, the ability to execute — not just to win contracts — becomes the defining variable.

The 2025 numbers make clear why the company felt the need to reinforce its structure. Total revenues reached $3.2 billion, while the Commercial Operations segment posted 63% year-over-year growth, rising from $524 million to $853 million. The first quarter of 2026 accelerated even further, with commercial revenues climbing to $284 million — a 121% increase compared to the same period the previous year. Growth at that pace demands an organization capable of scaling without losing grip on quality and process safety.

This comes amid a period of intensified strategic activity. In June 2025, BWXT named Kevin McCoy as Chief Nuclear Officer, a role supporting naval programs for the Columbia- and Virginia-class submarine fleets. BWXT is also the manufacturer of the reactor vessel for the SMR being developed by GE Vernova and Hitachi, and is evaluating the acquisition of Precision Components Group to expand civilian nuclear manufacturing capacity in the United States. Maddux’s appointment fits into this sequence as the piece that solidifies the operational backbone before volumes climb further.

If current trends hold, BWXT is approaching a point where pressure on operations becomes the true bottleneck of the American nuclear sector. Having a dedicated executive with cross-cutting authority over the entire production chain could make the difference between an order backlog that converts into revenue — and one that remains on paper.
