CoLab has announced a partnership with the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), an ISO member body, to bring international standards directly into its AI-powered technical review tools. The agreement covers AutoReview, the flagship AI software from the St. John’s, Newfoundland-based company, which can now compare technical drawings in real time against ISO standards covering geometry, dimensional tolerances, surface finishes, edge conditions, and welds.
The practical impact is immediate. AutoReview automatically flags deviations from standards and cites the specific normative reference. Engineers can also query Operator, CoLab’s conversational AI interface, to ask whether a given design meets a particular ISO requirement. The stated goal is to catch non-conformances during the design review phase, before components ever reach the shop floor. CoLab’s customer base includes teams designing nuclear reactors, jet engines, and medical devices — environments where a tolerance error is never a minor detail.
The broader context explains why this integration makes sense now. According to research conducted by CoLab itself, 45% of design standards and guidelines are not consistently documented, updated, or referenced during review cycles. The average engineering organization reviews more than 35,000 drawings per year. Traditionally, verifying standards compliance was a manual process: document access requests, reading through specifications, handwritten markups. Slow, inconsistent, and heavily dependent on the individual reviewer’s expertise.
With CoLab 4.0, released around the same time, the platform has also added collaboration tools including Canvas for co-design, Notebooks for documentation, and video support with timestamped comments. Two native integrations with PTC Creo and Siemens NX allow engineers to push drawings directly from their CAD environment into CoLab without manual exports. AutoReview’s architecture is built on foundation language models, on top of which CoLab layers its own proprietary datasets — developed with industry experts, standards body partnerships, and individual customer data. Customer data remains isolated and does not feed public models.
For the nuclear sector, where regulatory compliance is a core part of component qualification, having a tool that automatically and traceably verifies drawings against ISO standards reduces the risk of errors surfacing late in the process, when the cost of correction is already high. CoLab has already announced additional data and integration partnerships for the second half of 2026. If the SCC agreement proves to be a replicable model with other national and international standards bodies, AI-assisted technical review could become the de facto standard for the most complex engineering programs — reactors included.
