China doesn’t just build reactors. It builds the entire industrial ecosystem that powers them. In 2026, five manufacturers of industrial valves for nuclear power plants stand out for their technical capabilities, supply volumes, and presence on the country’s major construction sites. This is a market segment that few Western observers follow closely, yet it forms an integral part of the machine that has made China the world’s leading reactor builder — both in units in operation and under construction.
Nuclear valves are anything but ordinary components. They operate under extreme pressure, at high temperatures, in environments where fault tolerance is close to zero. Specialized manufacturers must comply with stringent certification standards — including those set by the NNSA, China’s nuclear safety authority, which since January 2026 has been operating under the updated Atomic Energy Law revised in September 2025. That legislation tightened licensing requirements for safety-component manufacturers, making access to the supply chain even more selective.
Among the most notable names is SUFA Technology Industry, one of the sector’s most historically established players. Its portfolio includes high-pressure gate valves, pressure-seal designs, and metal-seated variants for extreme-environment applications. SUFA is active in major nuclear and petrochemical projects, offering certified technical documentation and commissioning support — a detail that matters when critical infrastructure is at stake. Another key player is Shanghai Valve Factory, which brings decades of manufacturing experience for both nuclear and conventional power plants and has built deep expertise in heavy metallurgy over the years.
The broader market context explains why this segment is expanding. CGN Power and CNNC together account for over 95% of China’s nuclear industry revenues. By end-2022, 55 nuclear units were in operation with a combined capacity of 57 gigawatts, with another 21 units under construction. Nuclear output grew at an average annual rate of 8.5% between 2018 and 2023, reaching 442 billion kilowatt-hours. Every new reactor requires thousands of components: valves, pumps, fluid control systems. Domestic demand alone is enough to sustain a manufacturing supply chain at scale.
Chinese nuclear valve manufacturers are also targeting international markets. Export capability depends on API and ISO certification, English-language technical documentation, and engineering support for projects outside China. Some players have already positioned themselves as suppliers for facilities in Asia and the Middle East, where Chinese nuclear technology — particularly the HPR-1000 reactor — is winning contracts. The valve thus becomes an indirect export product: it follows the reactor, rather than leading the way.
July 2026 brought a further signal of the sector’s technological trajectory: CNNC announced the completion of power generation tests on China’s first megawatt-class helium turbine plant, a closed Brayton cycle system built by its subsidiary CNNC Huaxing. Next-generation reactors — high-temperature, gas-cooled, or the most advanced SMRs — will require even more specialized fluid-dynamic components. Those currently manufacturing valves for pressurized water reactors are already working to adapt their products to the thermal cycles of the future. China’s supply chain isn’t waiting to be ready — it’s getting there ahead of time.
