AE Industrial Partners has closed its acquisition of L3Harris Technologies‘ space propulsion, power, and electronics divisions for a total of $845 million. The deal marks the return of Rocketdyne as an independent company, with an explicit mandate to develop nuclear energy systems for space applications.
The transaction encompasses operating units spread across five U.S. sites — six decades of missions spanning national security, civil programs, and the commercial market, now operating under an autonomous roof. L3Harris retains a minority stake and remains a strategic partner, but full operational control passes to AE Industrial. The fund currently manages approximately $9 billion in assets and has completed more than 155 investments since 2015, with a portfolio that already includes Firefly Aerospace, Redwire Space, and York Space Systems.
The announced investment priorities cover three areas. First, the technological and manufacturing upgrade of the RL10 engine, an upper-stage powerplant with a track record spanning decades of institutional launches. Second, the expansion of the in-space thruster product line. Third — and the area drawing the most attention — the development of nuclear energy solutions for space. AE Industrial and L3Harris intend to work together to advance nuclear propulsion for Mars exploration and cislunar operations.
The U.S. policy environment is supportive. The White House has already embedded in its Space Policy Framework the goal of deploying nuclear reactors on the Moon and in orbit, with a launch window for a first lunar reactor set before 2030. Rocketdyne, with the space nuclear asset portfolio inherited from its Aerojet lineage, is well positioned to pursue that trajectory. The propulsion business had already posted $2.8–2.9 billion in revenues in 2025, with 12% year-on-year growth — figures that point to an expanding market rather than a defensive divestiture on L3Harris’s part.
The decision to restore the Rocketdyne brand is more than a communications move. The name carries institutional recognition within defense circles and space agencies that functions as a technical credential in its own right. AE Industrial acquired it alongside the contracts, personnel, and infrastructure, with the stated goal of building a company capable of moving with the agility of a specialist operator while maintaining the reliability expected of a prime defense supplier. If space nuclear propulsion advances from the experimental phase to operational deployment in the coming years, Rocketdyne intends to be the name on the engines.
