Support for nuclear energy in the United States is hitting record highs. A 2025 survey captures a country where Democrats and Republicans are closer than ever on an energy issue: both want to invest in the next generation of nuclear technologies. The finding is clear-cut and worth noting, because on almost no other energy source does such broad, cross-partisan consensus exist today.
The numbers speak for themselves. 62% of Republicans and 58% of Democrats believe the United States should increase investment in advanced nuclear research and development. A gap of just four percentage points — negligible compared to the divides on oil, coal, and natural gas, where the two parties are anywhere from 12 to 19 points apart. Nuclear energy, in short, is the one energy topic Washington does not fight over.
Long-standing concerns still exist, but the trend is firmly downward. Compared to 2018, worries about health and safety have dropped by nine points among Democrats and ten points among independents. Concerns about waste management have also declined across all political affiliations: the sharpest fall is among Democrats, down from 92% to 77%, followed by independents, who dropped 13 points. This shift is no accident. Decades of safe plant operations and more effective science communication have steadily eroded fears that took root in the 1970s and 1980s, the era of major media alarmism over nuclear power.
The poll comes at a moment when the United States is reshaping its energy policy at a fast pace. The ADVANCE Act of 2024, passed with bipartisan support, streamlined permitting and deployment procedures for advanced reactors. The Department of Energy has awarded more than $400 million to the Tennessee Valley Authority and Holtec to accelerate nuclear projects. Meanwhile, the private sector raised billions in investment in 2025 alone: from X-Energy to TerraPower, from Commonwealth Fusion to Radiant, capital is flowing toward technologies that just a few years ago seemed far from market-ready.
The technical landscape is also evolving. Nuclear fuel recycling technologies promise to significantly reduce both the volume and radioactive lifespan of waste requiring deep geological disposal. Modular recycling systems are lowering the costs and logistical barriers that have so far made this approach impractical at scale. Should fuel recycling gain traction, much of the waste debate would lose its central premise, turning a longstanding flashpoint into a solvable engineering challenge.
The overall picture suggests that the United States is in a phase of structural realignment toward nuclear energy. Bipartisan consensus on research funding, declining public concerns, and strong private investment are all pointing in the same direction. If policymakers can translate this consensus into concrete infrastructure, the country could build a fleet of advanced reactors over the next two decades capable of meeting both rising electricity demand and climate goals. It is not a foregone conclusion — but for the first time in decades, all the conditions are in place.
