Chernobyl used an RBMK reactor with characteristics now considered problematic, including instability under certain operating conditions and the absence of a Western-style containment structure. Modern plants have different designs, redundant systems, containment requirements, probabilistic analyses, and much more stringent international standards. Using Chernobyl as if it represented all modern plants is a historical and technical error.
