India: 600 crore rupees invested in nickel superalloys for nuclear energy

Indian group Raghu Vamsi Aerospace will invest over 600 crore rupees (around €65 million) to build in Telangana one of the world’s few integrated facilities for nickel superalloys, serving sectors including nuclear energy. Production is set to begin in January 2028 with an annual capacity of 5,000 tonnes.

Raghu Vamsi Aerospace Group will build one of India’s few integrated nickel superalloy production facilities in Telangana, with an investment exceeding 600 crore rupees. The announcement came on 22 July 2026, at the opening of the Farnborough International Airshow, the world’s premier showcase for the aerospace and defence sectors.

The site will span 50 acres and be located at the Hardware Park, near Hyderabad’s international airport, at the heart of Telangana’s advanced industrial district. Annual production capacity is set at 5,000 tonnes, with commercial operations scheduled to begin in January 2028. Under one roof, the facility will integrate vacuum melting, forging, heat treatment, vacuum casting and powder metallurgy — a level of vertical integration that few plants anywhere in the world can claim. Finished products will include round bars, wire, forgings, castings and tungsten carbide powders.

The project will be led by Dr S.K. Jha, former chairman and managing director of Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (Midhani), India’s leading state-owned special metals company, operating under the Ministry of Defence since 1973. His involvement sends a clear signal: this facility is not being built to serve a single customer, but to establish a supply chain. India currently imports a significant share of its nickel alloy requirements, and this dependency weighs on every sector that operates under high temperatures and extreme pressures.

Nickel superalloys are essential materials for nuclear reactors, gas turbogenerators, aircraft engines and space systems. They withstand temperatures and mechanical stresses that no ordinary steel could endure. In the nuclear sector in particular, internal reactor components — from steam generators to core structures — require alloys capable of maintaining structural integrity for decades in high-radiation environments. The Asia-Pacific region is already identified as the fastest-growing market for these materials, driven by the expansion of nuclear fleets in China, India and South Korea — all countries investing heavily to reduce dependence on international suppliers.

Funding is already largely secured. On 20 July 2026, two days before the Farnborough announcement, Raghu Vamsi Aerospace closed a $40 million (approximately 400 crore rupees) funding round led by Norwest and Skegen Asset Management. Private capital has arrived ahead of any government support, confirming that the market views domestic production of advanced materials as strategically critical. If timelines hold and quality meets nuclear and aerospace standards, the Hyderabad facility could become a key supplier not only to the domestic market, but to the entire Indo-Pacific region — which over the next two decades will build more reactors than any other part of the world.
