Global investment in nuclear fusion surged 69% over the past year, reaching a record $4.5 billion. The sector is attracting major players like Google, Chevron, and Nvidia, as the prospect of commercial fusion power plants in the 2030s draws closer.

Global investment in nuclear fusion reached $4.5 billion over the past year, marking a 69% increase compared to the previous period. The figure, published by the Fusion Industry Association in July 2026, confirms a genuine shift in momentum: the private sector is buying in, and capital is following. Since 2021, cumulative funding has hit $14.2 billion.

Four companies accounted for more than half of all investment over the reference year: Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Inertia Enterprises, Helion Energy, and Proxima Fusion. CFS is perhaps the most high-profile case: it closed an $863 million funding round with Nvidia among the new investors, alongside Google, Khosla Ventures, and Bill Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures. Its experimental reactor SPARC is targeting first plasma in 2026, with commercial production planned for the following decade. Google has also signed a power purchase agreement to buy 200 megawatts of fusion energy from CFS once the ARC project comes online. On the research side, DeepMind announced a partnership with CFS to integrate artificial intelligence into reactor development.

The investor profile speaks volumes. Alphabet, Chevron, Microsoft, Eni, and Cenovus Energy are among the major listed corporations that have staked out positions in the fusion market, often through stakes in private companies. Eni is one of the most active European players: the Italian energy giant invested $50 million in CFS back in 2018, giving it a head start over most of its continental peers. Eni reported adjusted net profit of €1.4 billion in Q1 2025, with a 2025–2028 plan focused on selective investments — and fusion is firmly part of that long-term strategy.

On the corporate activity front, in December 2025 Trump Media & Technology Group announced a $6 billion merger with TAE Technologies, the world’s longest-running private fusion company, founded in 1998. If the deal closes as planned, it would create one of the first publicly listed fusion companies in the United States. TAE has raised over $1.3 billion from investors including Google, Chevron, and Goldman Sachs, holds more than 1,600 patents, and plans to break ground on a 50-megawatt facility in 2026.

Most fusion companies remain unlisted. TAE Technologies, Zap Energy, General Fusion, and Helion Energy are all privately held. Investors seeking exposure to the sector today must go through the large conglomerates that back them — with all the liquidity and transparency constraints that entails. It is a structural limitation of the market, but also a reflection of how young this industry still is. Young, and flush with rapidly growing capital: that combination is rare.

Conservative projections place the first commercial fusion plants somewhere between 2030 and 2035. That is not a distant horizon, especially when energy infrastructure projects are typically measured in decades. The acceleration of private investment — driven by tech giants and major energy companies alike — suggests the window is narrowing. Those who position themselves now, whether in the sector itself or across the supply chain, are betting on a market that could look entirely different ten years from now.
