Is it true that nuclear waste is simply buried?

False.

Geological disposal is not a hole in the ground. It involves geological characterisation, engineered containers, engineered barriers, monitoring systems, regulatory licences, safety analyses, and closure procedures. The objective is to isolate waste from the biosphere for timescales consistent with radiological decay. The word 'buried' makes the entire technical and regulatory apparatus invisible.
