Trump Media and TAE Technologies: a $6 billion merger for nuclear fusion

Trump Media & Technology Group and TAE Technologies have announced an all-stock merger valued at over $6 billion, aiming to build the first commercial-scale nuclear fusion power plant. The deal is designed to position the United States as a global energy leader in the age of artificial intelligence.

Trump Media and TAE Technologies: a $6 billion merger for nuclear fusion

Trump Media & Technology Group and TAE Technologies have signed a definitive all-stock merger agreement valued at over $6 billion. The announcement, made on December 18, 2025, immediately sent Trump Media shares surging 33–35% in early trading.

Under the terms of the deal, shareholders of each company will hold approximately 50% of the combined entity on a diluted basis. The new company will be publicly listed, making it one of the first nuclear fusion firms to gain access to public capital markets. Devin Nunes, Chairman and CEO of Trump Media, and Michl Binderbauer, CEO of TAE Technologies, will serve as co-CEOs of the merged company. The holding structure will encompass Truth Social, Truth+, Truth.Fi, TAE, and its subsidiaries TAE Power Solutions and TAE Life Sciences.

The operational roadmap is well-defined. The combined company plans to select a site and break ground on the first commercial-scale nuclear fusion power plant in 2026, pending required regulatory approvals. The pilot facility is sized at 50 megawatts electric, with subsequent plants planned in the 350 to 500 megawatt range. TAE has already conducted site surveys across several U.S. states, including Alabama, Ohio, and Texas, assessing infrastructure, grid connectivity, and workforce availability.

TAE Technologies has been operating since 1998 and has built and run five fusion reactors. The company has raised over $1.3 billion in private capital from investors including Google, Chevron Technology Ventures, Goldman Sachs, and Sumitomo Corporation of Americas, and holds approximately 1,600 patents. In April 2025, the company published experimental results in Nature Communications demonstrating a streamlined approach to plasma formation — via neutral beam injection — capable of reducing reactor complexity and costs. This allowed TAE to skip an entire generation of machines and move directly to developing its first commercial plant, known as Da Vinci. The merger with Trump Media was driven primarily by the need for capital: Binderbauer stated that the technology was ready, but the financial capacity to bring it to commercial scale was the missing piece.

Nuclear fusion generates energy by combining light atoms — the same process that powers the Sun — without producing long-lived radioactive waste, unlike conventional fission. AI-driven energy demand has reignited the tech sector’s interest in fusion: Google, itself an investor in TAE, is among the companies seeking reliable power sources for its data centers. In parallel, TAE has established the joint venture TAE Beam UK with the UK Atomic Energy Authority, headquartered at the Culham Campus in the United Kingdom, to commercialize neutral beam technology for both fusion applications and other industrial sectors.

If the deal closes as expected in the first half of 2026, the resulting company will represent an unprecedented experiment: a media company reinventing itself as an energy operator with grid-scale production ambitions. The real test will come when a site is chosen and construction actually begins — that is when the merger of capital and technology will face its ultimate proving ground.
