Batteries are essential for balancing solar and wind on hourly and daily scales, but they do not by themselves solve all problems of seasonality, prolonged periods without wind or sun, reserves, and system capacity. The IEA emphasises that integrating renewables requires a combination of flexibility: storage, grids, flexible demand, and low-carbon dispatchable generation. Batteries and nuclear can be alternatives for some services and complementary for others.
